At today's Teen Think Tank meeting one of the discussions was about using Rock Band for teen programming. Their were two ideas that came up. Both ideas included the use of a large inflatable screen for The second was having a live competition, in front of an audience where the teams (bands) scored points and the participants could voteAnyone doing anything like this, or some other performance related challenges?

Both?
Doing the event live seems like it would have a more exciting element to it as well as a community building piece (more people there to talk, laugh, and have a good time). The scores could then be recorded and posted online for prospective future participants to weigh themselves against. These "record" scores could then be set and broken at future tournaments.

Rockband Concern
Having a Rockband competition is a great idea but my only concern is that you would not be able to advertise that it is "Rockband" because of the legal issues of using their name without a license.
Is that an issue
I know you can't typically advertise a movie like tha (unless you get special permission), however, I was not aware that Video Games were under the same licensing restrictions.
...well
well you could always call it "The RockOn Competition"

What we did/tried
We attempted to so something like this at the local high school auditorium using a movie screen and media projector combined with our sound system. We were going to do a bracket style tournament based on points scored, with a trophy and prizes to the winners.
This event never happened though because we were charging $5 to enter, which we didn't think was much, but that was the feedback we got.
Later we tried a Rock Band free play with a similar set up at our community center, but getting them to come to our facility was tough too.
Our next step, do a free event at the school, but scheduling can be a problem since there are always plays/musicals going on.
It's a good idea, others should consider it. While he haven't had much luck yet, we haven't given up just yet.
Worked For Us......
I have run a Video Game Tournament for the past 3 years, and have had a great turnout for it. Last year we implemented Rock Band into the mix (this year will be Rock Band 2). It wasn't the strongest turnout of the 4 games we did (Guitar Hero 3, Super Smash Bros Brawl & Mario Kart were the other 3), but I would call it successful for it's first year.
We had a total of 8 bands compete. We did it on a stage, with seating set up for "fans", we also utilized a large projection screen, two flat panel tvs (for the band), stage lights and a smoke machine. The kids loved it. It did help that we had the other games going on at the same time, because competitors from other tournaments would come and watch and cheer the bands on while waiting for their next match.
We partnered with a local video game store to provide gaming systems and other equipment, and also helped with marketing. As a twist we had a panel of judges scoring bands based on stage presence. It was a lot of fun.
Its a great idea and the more you can "ham" it up for the contestants the better. Good Luck!
It is different then rock
It is different then rock band however we have done ddr competitions there is a company that you can hire they bring the screens sound system and i beleive it is 30 boards. The campers LOVED it.
