I am curious to hear the opinion people who design educational diet programs in their community: what diets do you promote?

we have atkins, the standard food pyramid, etc....

Personally, I have found that the only sure fire way to lose weight and still maintain lean muscle while working out is to follow these basic rules:

1. No simple carbs - ever. (regular soda, white rice, pizza, non-100% whole-wheat bread, etc)
2. Lots of COMPLEX carbs that are low on the glycemix index - ie won't spike your blood sugar (veggies, apples, brown rice, 100% whole-wheat bread, etc.)
3. LOTS of lean protein including fish, (tuna, salmon for omega-3s,etc) chicken, low-sugar / calorie yogurt, etc.
4. GOOD unsaturated fats - NUTS (like natural peanut butter), oils (instead of butter), etc...

also it is important to eat 6 small meals a day to keep your blood sugar at reasonable levels (prevents stuffing yourself :-)

any other suggestions either for foods or diet plans that actually work? do the fitness / health professionals agree with this type of diet?

We promote sensible eating,

We promote sensible eating, no diets.

NO DIETS!

Alot of times I get the question and never push a diet on anyone. I usually just tell them to stay away from fast foods and brown bag it as much as much as possible.
