That’s Right! NBC's new comedy staring actress Amy Poehler (SNL, Baby Moma) is about you, the Recreation Professional!
After talking to friends and colleagues about this new sitcom I received varied reactions. From all of my wonderful friends who think that my job consists of playing sports with neighborhood kids and going to theme parks I heard, “Really? They’re actually making a show about that?” From colleagues who had seen the previews there was excitement and from some concern.
The excitement from most was understandable. Here we are the Recreation Professional. Yet no one seems to know what that entails. Here comes along a network sitcom that is going to highlight our lives, bringing our day to day frustrations and moments of hilarity into people’s living rooms. Finally the countless branding sessions and trainings we sat through in past years seem almost worth it.
Then there is the concern: “Is all publicity good publicity?” Will this show make our profession out to be the constant struggle to bind our community together? Or will we be cast as the sinkhole into which tax payer money is drained to no end?
Whether you feel the excitement or give into the concern, no doubt you will be glued to your TV on April 9th for the premier of “Parks and Recreation”

New Show - Parks and Recreation
I really hope the new television series, Parks and Recreation doesn't end up damaging our public image. I know the show is a comedy and will include a lot of "spoofs" and "jokes" but they might end up being at our expense ... damaging our long-standing efforts to be taken seriously.
i hear you
yes, it will be interesting...hopefully it does more to raise awareness instead of ridicule, but having watched The Office I think the majority of the jokes will be at the expense of the R&P professionals.

Re: New Show - Parks and Recreation
Just looking at the promos and knowing the work of the writers, it looks like everyone’s gonna have their turn in the “Roasting Thrown” inckuding the public. Those producers and writers have a great way of poking fun and making all the characters heroes all in one show/season. It seems to me that this will help our profession. Help it gain awareness and make it more real for people; plus, it just looks funny. I can’t wait!

Gomer Pyle was in the Military
Gomer Pyle was a Marine, doesn't make me think all Marines are like Gomer Pyle.
For all of the oddness, wierdness, and zaneyness... the characters are likable :) that's enjoyable...
One thing to remember about "The Office" is the impact of Jim and Pam. Jim and Pam are kind of heroes... and perhaps the new show "Parks and Recreation" will capture some of that essence. Most shows and comedies have one key feature that make them watchable... and perhaps successful... that is someone to root for.
I am hoping that through the humor and gags, through the puns and the jabs... that a real sense of community pride and the hard work that people like us... who work with the public... actually do, gets some attention... positive attention :)
You'll have to excuse me now... you see I am off to make fun of the guy at that sells me my paper products :)

My two cents
Well, as many you I watched with anticipation. In my opinion the show was not funny. It portrayed us in an extremely poor fashion. I will not watch the show again. Arthur Graham...
I laughed so hard I cried
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but I the previews made me laugh. While watching the show, I laughed so hard that I cried. Yeah they are making jabs at aspects of our profession but if you can't laugh at yourself, then you are taking life to seriously. I will keep watching.

Love it... but Sean Penn had a better chance in Dead Man Walking
So far I have caught both of the aired episodes on Hulu... and I loved it. I totally felt for the main character and her seemingly misplaced optimism. Everyone has to admit that at some point in time they had some big idea that they thought everyone would love, everyone would want to help with, and no one could possibly object to… And then… there was your manager who was not nearly as optimistic, another department that gave you nothing but road blocks, and then the adoring public (probably just one person) that thought the idea equated to the downfall of their entire world.
Leslie Knope…. YOU BUILD YOUR PARK!!!!!
That said…
While I laughed and sympathized with the characters, my wife did not laugh at all. She gave a few giggles, but she later told me they were sympathy giggles because she felt sorry for me and my odd sense of humor.
If you don’t get it, by that I mean if you don’t work in recreation or public service, you won’t get it. While I hold out hope that Leslie and hapless recreation department will survive, I will not be surprised when it is no more than a “Complete Series DVD Package” of only 1 disc.

Way too drab
I have watched all episodes and found it dull. In trying to capture the Office spirit, they have failed by using characters that are just too difficult to connect with or even like.
Sad, this is a profession that would yeild endless opportunities for the show.
